his is a grey area of our history; few books cover it well. India's Independence Struggle by Bipin Chandra et al comes the closest among existing books; but even that book prefers to stick to "accepted" history. Only thing is that it also covers the alternative in passing, accepting that certain events and happenings are unexplained. It also agrees that there was planning - but it states that the planning started after the mutiny. It goes mid-way between War of Independence and Mutiny.
If you have on open mind, I would suggest you read Operation Red Lotus by Parag Tope et al. The author is a descendant of Tatya Tope, and the entire Tope family have taken it upon themselves to correct the record. They have provided extensive documented coverage with facts and figures - which will challenge some deeply held notions across the spectrum. This is a pretty serious book, and I am in the process of reading it.
I am a blogger on books, politics, business - and the first post based on this book is here : THE BUTCHER OF JHANSI by Vishal Kale on reflectionsvvk
I have read one of the sources the authors have used in their research, so was aware of these things earlier as well. That source is a book penned in 1880s in Marathi - an eyewitness account of a traveller during the First War Of Independence.
Operation Red Lotus has an extensive bibliography annotated at the end, maps, dates, graphs and facts making it for a stunning read. I highly recommend it. There are others, like the book by Veer Sawarkar, which I have not read.
