The Ganga Action plan was launched by Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India on 14 Jan. 1986 with the main objective of pollution abatement, to improve the water quality and treatment of sewage, and to prevent entering of toxic and industrial wastes into the river.
However, there has been as much as very less progress in the project. According to the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA), the progress status of the project is just 12%. This slow progress has made the authorities doubt if the mission shall be completed by the target year of 2020.
The results of the Ganga Action Plan show that some improvements in water quality were observed everywhere when measured in terms of DO (dissolved oxygen) and BOD (biochemical oxygen demand), although the improvements were quite small in some places.
