Soon after the discovery of electron, J.J. Thomson proposed, in 1904, a model of an atom to explain its properties. He named his model as 'Plum pudding model'. He said that positive charge is spread in the whole region of the atom just like a pudding and negatively charged electrons are embedded in it just like plums in a pudding so that the atom as a whole is neutral. Thus the red part of the watermelon was considered as positive charge and the black beans of it are considered as negative charges.
