Answer:

Because when we inhale our belly expands because the diaphragm contracts and pulls the lungs down. Diaphragm relaxes on exhalation to push the air out of the lungs and the belly deflates.

During inhalation, our stomach expands as it gets filled with air and during exhalation, our belly flattens as air is lost from it.

Explanation:

1. Inhalation means breathing air (oxygen) inside our body and exhalation refers to the process where we breath out air (carbon dioxide) from our body.

2. Inhalation is an active process where energy is required. Steps involved during this process are as follows:

• The internal intercostal muscles that are attached to the ribs gets contracted which pulls the ribs thereby increasing the volume of chest cavity or thoracic cavity.

• The volume of thoracic cavity further increases as diaphragm gets contracted.

• Due to this, expansion of lungs also occurs.

• Since the lungs gets expanded, this results in decrease of pressure inside the lungs and air moves inside the lungs.

•This is how inhalation occurs.

3. Exhaling carbon dioxide out from our body is a passive process. Step involved are:

• The external intercostal muscles gets relaxed but the internal intercostal muscles gets contracted.

• Due to this, the ribs are pulled to the inside and volume of thoracic cavity gets decreased.

• Diaphragm also relaxes.

• Lungs is compressed and pressure inside gets increased. As a result, the air is exhaled out.
