Before Lomov could communicate with the girl Natalya, they start an argument about Oxen Meadows. Chubukov, the lady's father also enters the heated conversation. After they end this, they enter into another debate about their dogs and which one is better than the other. In the midst of all this, proposal get neglected. Lomov falls off due to his palpitations and Chubukov instantly puts her daughter’s hands in Lomov’s hand. Unfortunately, this quarrelling still continues.

Chubukov has already driven Lomov out of his house. When he notices his daughter behaving frantically, he goes to call him back being an affectionate father. But, It seems disrespectful to him. This skeptical behaviour of Natalya is intolerable to him. So he calls it a burden to be the father of a grown-up daughter.

The play highlights how outrage and debates can harm a relationship. It also shows the future of such marriages which are done to cheat the partner. The sort of matrimonial alliances entered into by the wealthy people whose primary purpose is to amass riches has been illustrated.
