Oil spills take place when there is a collision between two ships, one or both of which are carrying oil; but, more often it is the result of shipwreck. When a ship runs into stormy weather or when the sea is rough, shipwrecks take place. The result is spillage of oil, sometimes in huge quantities. The oil then floats on the surface of the sea, as oil is not miscible with water. The effect of an oil spill can be catastrophic for marine life, especially on those species that are at or near the surface, or come to the surface as part of regular activity. Marine life is also affected as the thick oil film does not allow or reduces the penetration of sunlight below the surface.
Today, oil spill dispersants are used to disperse the floating oil to lessen the effect of such disasters.
