The actual distance between the two cities is 2000 km

Given : On a scale of 1:5×10^7 two cities are 4 cm apart.

To find : The actual distance between two cities.

Solution :

We can simply solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process. (our goal is to calculate the actual distance between the two cities)

The scale is = 1 : (5×10⁷)

Which implies,

1 cm on map means = (5×10⁷) cm actual distance

4 cm on map means = (4×5×10⁷) = (20×10⁷) cm actual distance

The actual distance between two cities :

= (20×10⁷) cm

= [(20 × 10⁷) ÷ 10⁵] km

= (20 × 10²) km

= (20 × 100) km

= 2000 km

(This will be considered as the final result.)

Reference for unit conversion :

  • 1 km = 100000 cm = 10⁵ cm

Hence, the actual distance between the two cities is 2000 km
