See the expansion noticed should be on every axis and thus it happens too but the change in lateral or any other expansion is so less that we neglect it.. Where as linear expansion is more easy to be noted and happens.. That's the reason behind it.. Measuring a length is easier than doing something with circumference and arcs.. To know the expansion
