When NaCl is heated in the presence of sodium its vapors turn yellow. This occurs because of the non-stoichiometric effect of sodium metal. It is also called as metal excess effect of sodium. If sodium chloride is introduced in the medium in such a state that the vapors of sodium chloride mix with that of sodium vapors it means the concentration of sodium is increased as compared to chlorine in NaCl. As a result, the crystals of NaCl formed exhibit yellow color.
