on reaching poleta what surprised the narrator and why

On reaching poleta the narrator was surprised because he saw a red roofed villa . He thought that it would be some humble dwellings. Later he get to know that it was a hospital where Nicolas and jacopos sister was undergoing treatment of the spine.
