On the basis of theromochemical equations (1), (2) and (3),
find out which of the algebraic relationships given in options
(a) to (d) is correct
1. C (graphite) + O₂ (g) → CO₂ (g); ∆ᵣH = x kJ mol⁻¹
2. C (graphite) + 1/2 O₂ (g) → CO (g); ∆ᵣH = y kJ mol⁻¹
3. CO (g) + 1/2 O₂ (g) → CO₂ (g); ∆ᵣH = z kJ mol⁻¹
(a) z = x + y (b) x = y – z
(c) x = y + z (d) y = 2z – x

Answer:

Reason:

C (graphite) + O2 (g) → CO2 (g); ΔrH = x kJ mol–1..…(i)

C (graphite) +  O2 (g) → CO (g);ΔrH = y kJ mol –1……(ii)

CO (g) + O2 (g) → CO2 (g);ΔrH = z kJ mol–1 ……(iii)

Adding (ii) and (iii) will be result in equation (I)

Which means that y + z = x
