Gandhi fasted because he believed that there was goodness in every human being and that all humans were capable of showing there tolerance, compassion, brotherhood and love.

On 15th August 1947 when the whole nation was celebrating Independence, Gandhi-the father of nation was on fast because he was saddened by the partition and communal riots.

On the day of Independence, he was in Calcutta to control the communal riots. Gandhi marked the day with a 24 hour fast, prayer, and spinning yarn.

He was against the partition " I cannot rejoice on August 15. I do not want to deceive you. But at the same time I shall not ask you not to rejoice. Unfortunately the kind of freedom we have got today contains also the seeds of future conflict between India and Pakistan. How can we therefore light the lamps?" Gandhi had said in July 1947.
