Let the Marked price be be a

Cost price = Marked price - Discount

=> CP = a - 40% of a

=> CP = a - 4a/10

=> CP = 6a / 10

Now,

According to question,

Discount = 840

=> 40a/100 = 840

=> 4a/10 = 840

=> a = 8400 / 4

=> a = 2100

Total price of A. C. = Rs 2100

Price paid to dealer = Rs 2100 - 4× 2100 /10

= Rs 2100 - 840

= Rs 1260
