Roots can develop either from a main radicle that is one large taproot with many small secondary lateral roots growing out of it, or can be a fibrous mass of roots that arise from the nodes in the stem, called adventitious roots.

Roots are categorised on the basis of:
- Roots are the underground part of a vascular plant that helps anchor plants down into the ground.
- Roots help absorb essential mineral elements, nutrients, and water from the soil. It has a main function which is used to store food.
Roots are categorized into two types they are tap roots and fibrous roots.
- Tap roots consist of a main axis root along which the smaller fine root called rootlets grows. Taproot is a characteristic of dicot plants. Examples are Raddish, Carrot etc.
- Fibrous roots consist of are bushy in nature where the fine roots grow directly from the stem of the plant. The fibrous root is a characteristic of the monocot plant. Example: Banana, wheat etc.
