During the freedom movement, Gandhiji had worked out a plan for social development. Some of his ideas were included as Directive Principles. As per the Gandhian Principles, the goverment is directed to take the following steps:

1) Provide free and compulsory education for all children up to the age of 14.

2) Promote cottage industriesw in villages.

3)  Prohibit the slaughter of cattle and modernize agriculture and animal husbandry.

4) Promote the educational and economic interests of the Scheduled Castes,  the Scheduled Tribes and the weaker sections of society.

5) Improve the level of nutrition and general health of the people.

6) Prevent the consumption of intoxicating drinks and harmful drugs.

7) Establish village panchayats
