Its a long history and believe me, it wasn't an easy name to choose.

Java, initially, was called OAK but they couldn't use the name as it was already a trademark by OAK technologies.

JAVA was initially called Oak after an Oak tree that stood outside James Gosling's office ;it went by the name green later , and was later renamed JAVA , from JAVA coffee said to be consumed in large quantities by the language 's creator . This also tells the story behind the logo JAVA.

hope this helps in your answer
