Once there was a big celebration planned in one of the major towns of Spain. Wine being one
of the major beverages at such celebrations, it was decided that everyone would have to
contribute their mite towards ensuring that this drink was available in adequate measure
during the celebration.
A huge cask was constructed and each citizen was told to get a bottle of his best wine and
pour it into the cask. Everyone would then drink from it. This would be a symbol of the unity,
love and respect that existed in the town.
Each citizen agreed to do as instructed. One of them reasoned " Why lose a bottle of my best
wine which others will enjoy when I could enjoy it myself. There will be hundreds of bottles
of wine in the cask. Just one bottle of water will not make a difference". So pouring a bottle
of water in the cask, he walked away.
On the day of the festival everyone made a beeline for the cask. One after another they
twisted the top and served themselves. Seeing no colour in the wine they proceed to sniff it.
They were shocked and solely disappointed to see that it was water. Everyone had thought
selfishly. Each one had poured a bottle of water instead of wine thinking it would not make a
difference.
