Once upon a time’ has been one of the favorite phrases in fairy tales we would like to listen to or read in our childhood as a part of our daily routine. These fairy tales used to take us to the world of fantasy, happiness, sorrow, and dilemma. Thus, most of us have grown up reading and listening to fairy tales which is believed to be a booster for children’s imagination and confidence. These also help set their morals and teach them what is good and bad. However, often these fairy tales have hidden messages which may influence children in negative ways by lowering their self-esteem and having an impact on the way they think. Although these fairy tales are very positive, they usually set unrealistic expectations of life which can bring disappointment in children’s future. In Fairy tales, everything seems to work out perfectly and leads to the ending towards living ‘happily ever after’. This type of concept creates an impractical expectation of life in children’s minds. This sort of perfection and ‘happily ever after’ image often makes children unaware and ignorant towards serious issues of life instead of preparing them for reality which is not always perfect. Consequently, there is a high chance that they may become dissatisfied with their lives in the future. Another significant problem with fairy tales is that these stories are shallow and often focus on delivering wrong messages. These focus on how only fair and good looking people can find love and happiness while unattractive people are evil and deserve miserable lives. For instance, one of the most popular fairy tales, Cinderella, features a beautiful and kind girl who has to live with her cruel and ugly stepmother and stepsisters. By the end of the story, Cinderella marries a handsome prince whom she claims to fall in love with after one dance, whereas her stepmother and stepsisters are forced to live unsatisfying lives at the end of the story. This simply lowers the self-esteem of young girls and children, develops a shallow mindset, and they feel uninterested in other people’s personalities who are not typically fair and good looking. In addition, the importance of physical appearance in fairy tales also reflects the idea of how women are only capable of being appealing to men and dependent on them. One of the fairy tale characters namely Snow White explores this idea very clearly. She is portrayed as more attractive than another woman in the story. However, she lacks intelligence and ability to fix her own problems and is dependent on a man to save her. Also, it is worthy to mention that as soon as Snow White starts living with men, she cooks and cleans for them as her only function. The female characters often feel the need to change themselves according to the demand of a male figure. Thus, young girls carry a low self-esteem and they think that they should be dependent on men as they are more powerful. Since stories teach children the difference between good and evil, truth and lie as well as build up moral characteristics, it is necessary to be careful while selecting the fairy tales for them. Fortunately, newer fairy tales and updated versions of the old ones are trying to include independent women of different races. For example, Elsa in ‘Frozen’, Moana, etc. reflect women empowerment while not being dependent on the males. These gradual changes in fairy tales might create nearly realistic pictures in children’s minds and help them to develop strong personalities. Summary of this please
