The fusion of male gamete (sperm) and female gamete (ovum) is called as fertilization. If this happens outside the body of female organism in the environment then it is called as external fertilization, and if it occurs inside the body it is called as internal fertilization.
Explanation:
- Generally, there are more advantages of internal fertilization than the disadvantages, and that's why in the higher organisms this kind of fertilization are found.
- One such advantage is that it protects the offsprings from the predators, and harsh environmental conditions.
- It also provides greater chances of fusion of gametes which is generally harder in case of external fertilization.
- One disadvantage of internal fertilization could be that very less number of offsprings are produced in such process as compared to the external fertilization.
- Another difficulty arises because it is harder to bring Male and female of the same species in close proximity.
