One can hear a sound of a far approaching a train by putting his ear on the rails.but he cannot hear the sound In air unless the train. Reached close to him.why?

due to the speed of train the genration of vibration occurs in rails and we can hear the sound whereas sound can't be determined in air because of the larger distance of train from station.
