SAARC countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They face similar health problems and challenges. India hosted the 5th meeting of the SAARC Health Ministers at New Delhi on 8 April, 2015. The meeting affirmed India's commitment to promote health cooperation in a more effective manner through the SAARC platform.
The health ministers pledged to eradicate polio from the region. They also expressed a commitment to make the region HIV AIDS free by the year 2030.
India has contributed large funds to implement measures to overcome these diseases in the SAARC countries. It is collaborating with the other countries to provide medicine through the use of TRIPS, regional trade agreements. It is helping in the promotion of traditional systems of medicine, encouraging visits of experts, organizing symposiums, and courses on medicine, and improving the availability of medicinal plant materials, research and development and in awareness generation.
