let the number be x.
1/4th of x= x/4
its succeeding number = x+1
1/5th of x+1= x+1/5
a/q     x/4 + 3 = x+1/ 5
       =   x/4 - (x+1)/ 5 = -3
       =   (5x - 4x- 4)/ 20 = -3
      =   x - 4 = -3*20
      = x= -60 +4
      ∴ x = -56
so the number is -56.
1/4 of - 56 = -14
1/5 of -55 =  -11
-14 exceeds -11 by 3
