Public sector plays a key role in the industrial development of the country. After independence, the number of public sector undertakings has increased considerably. There are a few industries that have been reserved exclusively under public sector enterprises. Some of them are as follows:
* Manufacture of ammunition, arms and allied items relating to defense equipment
* Production of atomic energy, mineral oils, lignite and coal
* Mining of metals like wolfram, molybdenum, copper, tin, lead and zinc
* Mining of manganese, chrome and iron ores
* Mining of non-metals like diamond, sulphur, gold and gypsum
*Railway transport
