After meeting with a serious accident, which paralyzed Hooper, he fell into depression. Even the company of his dog, Duke couldn’t help him much in fighting his condition. So, one evening he idly hooked the leash of Duke to his collar. This charged Duke and he started prancing about. Hooper somehow lost the balance. But, with his wife, Marcy's help he took a step forward. This emboldened Hooper. He understood that with Duke's help he could fight out his disability. Determined to overcome his weakness, he started taking short walks with Duke pulling the leash taut to support him. One day he was able to go the intersection. Gradually, he managed to cover long distances with Duke supporting him with taut leash. Eventually, he took up a desk work at his company and discharged his duties efficiently. It was Duke’s relentless support that had made this day a reality. However, he himself could not enjoy this bliss for long. After about nine months, he met with an accident and died. When Hooper was appointed as the Assistant Sales Manager in the firm, Duke was not alive to share the happiness, to witness the result of his hard work.
