One is often unable to taste the fruit of one's hard work. Explain the statement referring 'Dog Named Duke'

They say" parishram ka phal meetha hota hai" meaning,the fruit of hard work is always sweet. But things are different here with duke. He helped his crippled master to get up on his feet. Instead of awarding duke with a happy life,he had to face death. He had to leave his beloved master and go to God. Cheers!
