The elliptical pore is the stoma (plural is ‘stomata’) and the kidney-shaped cells are ‘guard cells’.

Stomata

The stomata facilitate gaseous exchange during photosynthesis and respiration.

In addition, water vapor diffuses through them into the atmosphere during transpiration.

The number, size and distribution of stomata vary widely across the type of plants.

Guard Cells

The guard cells are a pair of specialized parenchyma cells that are present on each side of the stoma.

They are responsible for regulating the size of the stomatal opening making it open or closed.
