HIV/AIDS ( Human Immunodefiency Virus / Acquired Immunodefiency Syndrome)

AIDS was first recognized in USA in 1981 . The disease is spreading at an alarming rate. In India, it is estimated that there are more than 200000 patients of AIDS . People in age groups 20-39 are more susceptible to getting AIDS . The causative agent is a germ called HIV . It has been detected in body fluids like blood, semen, saliva, tears and urine. It attacks the immune system of the body and the patient suffers from minor infections. The immune system provides immunity to our body but if it fails, cancer may occur. The disease can be transmitted by the HIV virus. It can transmit from sexual intercourse between a man and woman , when one of them is infected. Prostitution is the biggest source of the spread of this virus. The disease is more common to homosexual person. It can also be transmitted by contaminated blood transfusions. According to the news published in The Times of India dated August 5 , 1995 , in one of the hospitals of Bombay, 45 of 64 thalassemia children of age group 2-15 years were found to be HIV positive , means they have received this virus and due to blood transfusions. The disease can also spread from mother to child as if mother is affected , and through placenta and womb, the virus may reach to the child. Other mode of transmission is injection needles common in drug abusers . For the same reason, doctors in hospitals now use only disposable syringes which are used just once.
