we assumed it takes t1 time to fill the tank for pipe 1.

so rate = V/t1

rate of second pipe is 3 time rate of first =3V/t1.

now combined rate = V/36

As given

but combined rate is also equal to r1+r2

substituting you get the answer.

Then, you get the answer - 144 minutes.
