The colonists did not have trained men to fight with the Britishers, and so they had a tough time pulling that untrained unit together to form a militia, and act against the Britishers. Fighting against the Britishers was a huge act for them, and that too with those pack of untrained men. The colonists asked the men to join them against the Britishers, leaving their occupations and fields. It was a dangerous thing to do, and also very risky. Hence, revolting against the British wasn't a piece of cake for them. It required a lot of convincing and grit, to put everything at stake and revolt against a paramount force, who were far more skilled and militarily equipped than them.

Hope it helps.
