Let The number = n

So, One-tenth of number n = $\dfrac{1}{10}$ × n

                                          = $\dfrac{n}{10}$

The predecessor of number n = n - 1

So, One-seventh of number ( n -1 ) = $\dfrac{1}{7}$ × ( n - 1 )

                                                      = $\dfrac{n-1}{7}$

According to question

one tenth of a number =  1 seventh of its predecessor - 2

i.e  $\dfrac{n}{10}$ = $\dfrac{n-1}{7}$ - 2

Solving this equation

or,  $\dfrac{n}{10}$  =  $\dfrac{n-1-14}{7}$

By cross multiplication

  7 n = 10 ( n - 15 )

Or,  7 n = 10 n - 150

Or,  10 n - 7 n = 150

Or,     3 n = 150

∴           n = $\dfrac{150}{3}$

i.e number = n = 50
