Let me just enlighten it in brief otherwise you can add instances from the story.

If we have a shoe which is somehow damaged and it becomes uncomfortable for the person who wears it ,then we as outsiders cannot know the pain of that person. we come to know about the pain that the person is experiencing only when our own shoe gets damaged.

In the story "The Letter" by Dhumaketu, the postmaster first gets highly irritated and angry on coachman Ali at his persistent routine of coming to the post office and asking for a letter from Miriam his daughter. he calls him a madman and a pest in his own agitation not knowing about the agony the  old man is going through. He has been waiting for just one letter for the last 5 years without failing any single day to show up in the PO. He is sad, lonely and in dismay over the love for his daughter. but the postmaster never understands this pain and love until the day when he himself experiences it.

His own daughter now is ill in a neighbouring and he is anxiously waiting for a letter of assurance from her. He now realises that the dismay and sadness he could not bear for even one night has been the case with Ali for the last 5 years and still he dies without receiving it. He is now understanding the wait and longing of Ali.
