Mercury is used in laboratories for making thermometers, barometers, diffusion pumps, and many other instruments. It is used for mercury switches and other electrical apparatus. It is used as an electrode in some types of electrolysis and for making batteries (mercury cells).

The uses of mercury are as follows :-

(i) Mercury expands easily and uniformly on heating. It gives an accurate measurement of the temperature.

(ii) Mercury can be used over a wide range of temperatures, as it's freezing point is -39° C and boiling point is 357°C.

(iii) Mercury is easily visible, being opaque and shiny.

(iv) Mercury doesn't stick to the sides of a glass tube of a thermometer.

(v) Mercury is practically non—volatile.

(vi) Mercury easily forms alloys called amalgams with other metals such as gold, silver and tin.
