There are two type of software first is opensource and second is closed source. Open source are those whose source code are available for modification distribution and other use without taking permission of the owner where closed source are those whose source code is unavailable and if you try to modify it without its owner permission you may get DMCA or legal action. For example android os is opensource which made it popular where's iOS is closed source. Don't confuse with free app as being open source and paid app being closed because remember one thing their sources are open for you but not the app for instance take kernel auditor this is an opensource app which premium version costs like 200/INR but it is opensource. So for you only sources are open not the app if you think you would downloaded an opensource app and again publish it in playstore or somewhere else you could get DMCA and even fine. usually source are download from github, caf etc
