The story is a tale of trials and tribulations of the family during their voyage, yet none of the family members showed any sign of weakness, both physical and mental. Even the children kept up their courage and showed great hope and optimism with pulls them through their hard times. Similarly, though without a proper compass, the narrator guessed by means of his navigational experience and trusted that they would find the island at about five in the evening. So, he asked Lary to steer a course of 185 degrees, and to his amazement, he spotted the island after he woke up an hour later.

Answer:

“Optimism and courage help to tide over difficulties”. This phase seems to work in every situation of life, as is evident in the story "We're not afraid to die if we can all be together" by Gordan Cook and Alan East.

It was almost impossible to find such a small island in 1,05,000 km ocean, but the narrator didn't lose hope and kept trying. He calculated and recalculated everything and also took help of the sextant. He advised one of the crewman to turn 185 degrees and told that by 5 in the evening they would reach there. Besides, his children were a constant source of motivation who believed in their father. It shows that coordination, trust, bravery and courageousness can help anyone to overcome such global ailments. With the help of these qualities and author's navigational experience and resourcefulness he finally succeeded in finding the "most beautiful island", Ile Amsterdam which was a ray of hope of survival.
