The formula of the compound formed by an element X (of atomic number 11) and an element Y (of atomic number 8) is X2Y.

  • The electronic configuration of element X is 1s2,2s2,2p6,3s1 ,so in order to attain nearest noble gas configuration it loses one electron and forms a monovalent cation X(+).
  • The electronic configuration of element Y is 1s2,2s2,2p4 ,so in order to attain nearest noble gas configuration it gains two electrons to form a divalent anion Y(2-).
  • Now, since a compound should be electrically neutral , its formula should be X2Y.
