1. By what common name are the substances on the left of the arrow in a chemical equation called ?

Ans:- Reactants.

2. Write the word equation for the reactions:

(a) Calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid to form calcium chloride, carbon dioxide and water.

Ans:- 2HCl (aq) + CaCO 3(s) CaCl 2 (aq) + CO 2(g) + H 2 O (l).

(b) Magnesium burns in carbon dioxide to form magnesium oxide and carbon

Ans:-2Mg+CO2 →2MgO+C

(c)Sodium metal reacts with water to give sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas .

Ans:- 2Na + 2H2O = 2NaOH + H2.

(d) Carbon dioxide passed through lime water gives white turbidity due to the formation of calcium carbonate.

Ans:- When CO2 passes through lime water, it turns it into milky carbonate water due to formation of insoluble carbonate.

4Ca(OH) 2+CO2→CaCO 3 (+)+H2O If CO2 is passes for longer period, turbidity disappears due to form of soluble calcium bicarbonate.

CaCO 3 +H 2o+CO 2 CO2→Ca(HCO 3 ) 2
