Answers. In fact, molecularity and order of reaction are identical if the reaction is elementary. They may become different when the reaction is complex and has a mechanism. The molecularity of a reaction is defined as the number of molecules or ions that participate in the rate determining step.

  • order: it is the sum of the concentration terms on which rate of reaction actually depends whereas molecularity of a reaction is the number of atoms , ions or molecules that must collide with one another to form products in a chemical reaction.
  • order of reaction can be fractional as well as zero whereas molecularity of the reaction cannot be zero or fractional.
