Order of the events in the history of sugar:

  • (1) Sugar cane was cultivated in New Guinea. It is evident that sugar cane was produced in New Guinea in 8000 BC. They were the first people to grow sugar cane.

  • (2) Persians introduced sugar to the Middle East. It was found in 642 AD that the Persians already knew to grow sugar cane. However sugar cane came to Persia through India, probably in 510 BC during the reigns of Emperor Darius.

  • (3) Sugar was used in the Middle East. In time of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC, sugar cane came to the Middle East. Later they developed method to produce sugar from sugar canes.

  • (4) Europeans acquired sugar. Production of sugar cane started in 9th century in Europe. They started to use sugar in 11th century. However it was started to be used throughout the continent during the 16th century.

  • (5) Columbus brought sugar to Hispaniola. In time of his second voyage to Hispaniola in 1493, Columbus brought sugar cane from Europe.
