Each mouth part of the cockroach has a very specific function. The labrum is a flap-like structure which holds the food down so that it can be chewed. The labium is a structure which closes the mouth cavity from below.
However, the mandibles are horizontal hard chitinous structures, which are hinged to the skull of the cockroach. These move in a horizontal manner to grind and chew the food into smaller pieces and are also called the primary jaws of the cockroach.
