Orogenic forces are not responsible for the formation of Continents.

Orogenic Forces:

  • Oros in the Latin language means mountains.
  • Orogenic forces are the mountain-building forces, acting horizontally along the surface and thus creating mountains.
  • When the force is acting towards the center then Fold mountains are formed. For example the Himalayas, the Alps, etc.
  • When the force is acting away from the center then rift valleys and block mountains are formed. For example Rift valley of Narmada and Tapti and the Rift Valley of Nile.

Epirogenic forces:

  • These forces act along the radius of the Earth and so they are also called radial forces.
  • These forces are responsible for the submergence and emergence of the continents.
