Diffusion (and also effusion) of gases can be described quantitatively by Graham's law which states that under the same conditions of temperature and pressure the rate of diffusion (and effusion) of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its density. Since density is mass per unit volume, it is proportional to mass, or molar mass. The law is thus simplified by replacing 'density' term with 'molar mass'. Both of these forms are known as Graham's law, though the latter is easier to conceive and apply.
The molar masses of the given gases are, CO2= 44, Cl2 = 71, CH4 = 16, and O2 = 32. So CH4 is expected to diffuse fastest and Cl2, the slowest.
