The best fabric to use in umbrellas would be the synthetic fibers since they are more hydrophobic and have a tendency to not let the water pass through them.
Nylon and polysters are two fibers that are generally used for making raincoats and umbrellas.
However if the umbrella is to be used to give shade from heat and sun then the cotton fabric would be preferable.
