  • It first started on May 10th, 1857 by sepoy Mutiny in Meerut.
  • There were various reasons behind the outbreak of this revolt.
  • Lord Dalhousie's doctrine of lapse was the main political cause , according to which if the ruler dies without a  male heir their land will be ceased by East India Company.
  • Indians constantly have to compete with the British industry machine manufactured goods with Indian handicraft goods.
  • Indian sepoys were paid less that European sepoys.
  • East India company abolished Sati pratha, child marriage and encouraged widow remarriage at that time it was considered a threat to Indian tradition.
