he oxidation number of nitrogen in the nitrate ion is +5.
I want to caution some people reading this that the +5 is not a charge. Nitrogen never has a positive ionic charge, and it barely has a negative charge (-3) in only a few compounds that are mildly ionic, like X3N, where X is an alkali metal (i.e K, Rb or Cs).
