Oxygen exist as diatomic gas while sulphur as octa atomic solid. Why ?

Oxygen atom is small and hence capable of forming pπ-pπ multiple bond and thus exists as O2. On the other hand, due to large size, sulphur does not form pπ-pπ multiple bond and form S8 sulphur rings
