1.)The strongest theme in Riders to the Sea is the conflict between religion, superstition, and nature. On the surface, Maurya and her family are devout Catholics. The most important thing to Maurya is the return of Michael's body so he can have a proper Catholic funeral.

2.)Maurya is also portrayed as a religious woman as seen when she sprinkles holy water on Michael's clothes and prays to God for his blessings. Maurya is an peasant woman who has 6 sons, 4 of whom have died at sea. Michael, one of 2 remaining sons, is also feared dead, as is Bartley, her final son.

4.) Wasserkopf is an unemployed man, about forty years old. He is turned away from all places that he goes to, seeking employment. At one place, he is even told by the owner that he has learnt nothing from school and to go take a refund of his fees, as he has learnt nothing from the school.
