M K Gandhi was leader of INC, the biggest political group in India and so had massive support almost throughout India. Any physical pains to him would have resulted into uncontrollable civic disturbance outside the jail. And that disturbance could have been violent. [defeating Gandhi’s Utopian principle of non-violence] Moreover, he was a high profile personality in Indian politics and therefore, British were definitely not idiot to ill treat such a harmless person.
