Pairing of homologous chromosomes is called Synapsis.

This procedure is also named as syndesis, which occurs before segregation of cells during meiosis. Normally, synapsis occurs in the Prophase I of meiosis.

As these homologous chromosomes synapse, the ends of these chromosomes join together with the nuclear cover of the cell.

Usually, the autosomes synapse during the meiosis stages and they are joined together with a protein compound, called synaptonemal complex.

Likewise, sex chromosomes also face synapsis, where synaptonemal complex is present only on one end of the chromosomes.
