Born on 16th September, 1894 in a village near Halisahar, 24 Parganas, Bibhuti Bhusan Bandopadhyay spent his childhood days in his maternal uncle’s house. His early education started in the village Pathsala and he was quite a meritorious student. He passed the Entrance Examination in 1914 from the Banagram High School and two years later, he passed the I.A. Examination in the first division. He graduated with distinction from the famous Ripon College in Calcutta in 1918.
After 1918, he became a teacher in a minor school and later joined service under a famous businessman named Keshoram. He had the opportunity to travel to East Bengal and Burma under the Zamindar of Pathuriaghata, Akshoy Ghosh. In 1924 he went to Bhagalpur as the manager of the Pathuriaghata estate. From 1930 to 1941 Bibhuti Bhusan re-engaged himself in the teaching profession.
1922 was an important year in the life of Bibhuti Bhusan. His first story ‘Upekshita’ was published in the Prabasi Patrika. From then onwards his literary career flourished. His literary works like Aranyak and Ichamati have enriched Bengali literature. His death in 1950 created a void in Bengali literature. He was posthumously awarded the ‘Rabindra Puraskar’ for his novel ‘Ichamati’.
