Article 21 of India’s Constitution states that, “the right to life includes the right to live with human dignity and [...] the bare necessities of life such as adequate nutrition, clothing and shelter over the head”. While India officially supports these rights, in reality, the conditions within Mumbai’s slums indicate that India is not providing its impoverished citizens with these necessities. 13 million people, nearly 54 percent of Mumbai’s population, are concentrated within these areas of public squalor. Mumbai’s slums originated from overpopulation, divisions between classes, and scarce opportunities for the poor. Poverty-stricken slum dwellers face numerous hardships in regards to sanitation and job stability, and respond by valuing money over their own lives and family. India’s government attempts to combat this phenomenon through the forced evictions of slum dwellers from their homes, and societal organizations respond by improving sanitation conditions within the slums of Mumbai.
